German Recirculating Trout Farm: Water Disinfection with Ozone Generators

Client Profile:

European Recirculating Trout Farm is located in Bavaria, Germany. It specializes in large-scale recirculating aquaculture of rainbow trout, with a total water volume of 5,000 m³ and an annual output of 300 tons of trout. The products are supplied to supermarkets in Germany and neighboring EU countries. Prior to our collaboration, the client faced two major challenges: First, the recirculating water system was prone to fungal and parasitic growth, leading to frequent trout diseases with a monthly mortality rate of 8%, which increased farming costs. Second, traditional water disinfection methods relied on chemical agents, resulting in drug residues that did not comply with EPA aquaculture disinfection standards and failed to pass random inspections by local food regulatory authorities.

Client Requirements:

  1. Eliminate fungi, parasites, and harmful bacteria in the recirculating water system, reducing trout mortality rates to below 2% with no drug residues;
  2. Comply with EPA aquaculture disinfection standards (ozone residual ≤0.05 mg/L) to ensure products pass local food safety inspections;
  3. Provide CE- and FDA-certified ozone generator equipment that can integrate with the existing recirculating water system;

Solution:

Based on the client’s trout farming requirements and international compliance standards, we have customized a dedicated ozone generator water disinfection solution:

  1. Install two CH-Y oxygen-source ozone generators (output: 80 g/h, CE and FDA certified) at the water intake of the recirculating system, equipped with an ozone exhaust treatment unit and a water system control system;
  2. Implement precise dosing control to adjust the ozone concentration (0.2–0.4 mg/L) according to different stages of trout farming. This ensures effective disinfection while preventing harm to the trout from excessive ozone exposure. The system integrates with the existing recirculating water system to achieve integrated operation;

Implementation Results:

One month after the equipment was put into operation, all indicators met expectations:

  1. Disinfection Compliance: The elimination rate of fungi and parasites in the recirculating water reached 99.5%, and the elimination rate of harmful bacteria reached 99.8%. There were no drug residues, fully complying with EPA aquaculture disinfection standards, and the system successfully passed random inspections by local food regulatory authorities;
  2. Reduced disease incidence: The mortality rate from trout diseases dropped from 8% to 1.5%, reducing monthly trout losses by approximately 4.5 tons and saving approximately $30,000 in farming costs;
  3. Convenient Operation and Maintenance: The equipment integrates seamlessly with the existing recirculating aquaculture system and operates automatically, reducing the labor force by two people and saving $15,000 in monthly labor costs. The equipment failure rate is less than 0.5%;
  4. Improved Quality: The trout meat is more tender, with a 100% product compliance rate. The product has gained recognition from local supermarkets and consumers, resulting in a 25% increase in order volume.

Customer Reviews:
